First of all, if you have to shop for parts: a MBP 4,1 is an 'Early 2008'. It uses a different trackpad assempbly than the later Unibody MBPs (Late 2008).
MacBook Pro MacRumors attracts a broad audience of both consumers and professionals interested in the latest technologies and products. We also boast an active community focused on purchasing decisions and technical aspects of the iPhone, iPod, iPad, and Mac platforms. I am seeing the same problem with the jumpy cursor and erratic trackpad on my brand new MacBook Pro: machine running fine for a while, then at random, the trackpad goes crazy, the pointer jumps around the screen and clicks randomly. This happens sometimes even when I am not touching the trackpad.
You've been through most of the troubleshooting steps. I would try seeing if the problem persists if you change user accounts. If you don't have one, it's OK to create s new account just for testing:
Apple macbook pro trackpad firmware free download - Apple MacBook/Pro Trackpad Firmware Update, Apple MacBook Pro SMC Firmware, Apple MacBook Pro (Retina) Trackpad Update. Check for macOS updates on your MacBook Pro and be sure to download and install any it finds. Go to Apple About This Mac Software Update You could also find the Software Update page from your System Preferences. Global Nav Open Menu Global Nav Close Menu; Apple; Shopping Bag +.
If the problem goes away in the new account, that indicates there is likely some software conflict in your user account that's the culprit.

I'm glad you didn't. For these forums, piggybacking really make it hard to help. When more than one person jumps in (we find the phrase, 'exact same problem' seldom is true), help offered the OP gets diluted, and us old-time helpers who have killed off too many brain cells get confused and can't keep track of who has what problem. You did exactly the right thing by creating your own thread.
Hi emma78, Mac download java sdk.
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
I see that you are having an issue with sensitivity and slowness on your MacBook Pro's Trackpad. I use the Trackpad a lot on my MacBook, so I know how important it is we get this working correctly. I have several things for you to try.
First, it's always good to make sure that you have a recent backup of your MacBook Pro's important data. This article will help make sure you have a backup:
Next, I see you are running OS X Yosemite (10.10). I would advise using the steps found in this article to update OS X:
Make sure that you have the latest software updates installed, specifically this section:
To check for Mac software updates, open the App Store app on your Mac, then click Updates in the toolbar. If updates are available, click the Update buttons to download and install them.
The Mac App Store shows updates for Mac, not updates for iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. If you don't have the App Store on your Mac, get OS X updates by choosing Software Update from the Apple () menu.
If you still have an issue after updating OS X, try the tips in this article:
Best Regards.
