Java Runtime Environment Mac

< Documentation‎ | FAQ‎ | Platform‎ | Mac OS X 10.5

I purchased a 13-inch MacBook pro with i5, 2.5GHz processor, 8GB of DDR3L onboard memory which runs on OSx Mountain Lion (10.8). I recently found out that Mountain Lion does not include Java Runtime Environment. Java is a runtime environment maintained by Oracle that you must install on your Mac to be able to run applications written using the Java programming language. Moreover, Java allows developers to make apps available on multiple operating systems at the same time because Java-based utilities will run on any platform that can integrate the runtime environment. How do I resolve the message, 'The folder does not contain a Java runtime environment. Please select a different folder.' (OOo 2.3)

There is currently a Bug reported for this problem Opened: Thu Oct 21 13:52:00 +0000 2010.

Mac OSX 10.6.4 & OpenOffice 3.3.1OpenOffice cannot find the JRE file (and nobody can seen to find it manually either) although it is installed by default on OSX (and up to date via Software Update).http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=115180

For older versions you may be able to manually locate it:

Java Runtime Environment

You can point OpenOffice to the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) through the dialog box at Tools... Options... OpenOffice.org... Java.... [that is for Windows]On mac it is via menu bar: OpenOffice.Org > Preferences > Java.

In OpenOffice 2.3 on Mac OS X 10.5, the right pane of that dialog box is empty. If you click on the Add... button, a 'select path' file open dialog appears. It isn't clear what directory to select to add a Java Runtime Environment. Pretty much any directory you pick will cause OOo to display the above message.

Java Runtime Environment Mac

The answer is that there is no such folder, and you don't need to operate this dialog box at all. The problem is that with Mac OS X 10.5, Apple changed how the Java Runtime Environment interacts with OpenOffice. OOo 2.3 can't use Java on Mac OS X 10.5. You need to use OOo 2.4 or better. See the topic Java Runtime Environment (JRE) for more information.

Java Runtime Environment Mac

Mac OS Runtime for Java (MRJ, originally Macintosh Runtime for Java) was Apple's proprietary virtual machine for Java-based applications in the classic Mac OS (i.e. versions prior to Mac OS X). Both a runtime environment and a software development kit (SDK) are available.

The runtime environment includes a JIT compiler developed by Symantec, the standard Java class library from Sun, additional classes providing Macintosh-specific functionality, and the Apple Applet Runner (a lightweight application for running Java applets without the overhead of a web browser). A number of web browsers could use MRJ to run Java applets in web pages, including MicrosoftInternet Explorer, iCab and HotJava.

The SDK includes ports of most of the tools from Sun's Java Development Kit (in the form of MPW tools and Macintosh applications), additional tools for packaging Java applications as double-clickable Macintosh applications, libraries for Macintosh-specific functionality, and documentation for the MRJ-specific classes and tools.

MRJ v2.2.5 was compatible with Sun's Java Development Kit version 1.1.8.[1]

Since the transition to Mac OS X, Apple has discontinued MRJ and instead maintains and distributes a port of Oracle'sHotSpot Java virtual machine.[citation needed]

Implementations[edit]

  • Java 1.0.2 with Mac OS Runtime for Java v 1.5.1 [1]
  • Java 2.2.6 with Mac OS Runtime for Java v 2.2.6 [2]
